Foster Grandparents Program

Since 1965, building a transgenerational bridge and uniting two groups in need….Older Americans and Youngsters.

The Gift of Caring

The Foster Grandparent Program does just that – the giving of oneself to those in need. The world is full of “special” children, but it is also filled with millions of would-be grandmas and grandpas.  The Foster Grandparent Program is a chance for older and younger Americans to answer each others’ needs and to get to know each other.  Foster Grandparents change the lives of children with the simple addition of an intangible, but completely natural asset: LOVE.

Program Concept

The Foster Grandparent Program serves a dual purpose by providing opportunities for low-income people, 60 years or older, to give supportive person-to-person services to children and teenagers.  Foster Grandparents are assigned to work only with children who have exceptional or special needs.

Program Advantages

Foster Grandparents serve 20 hours per week at their station. While they receive a stipend for their services, they are still considered volunteers.  The tax-free stipend is $2.65 per hour. This does not affect assistance or benefit programs such as Social Security, Title XIX, Food Stamps, Energy Assistance, etc.  In addition, Foster Grandparents receive 13 paid holidays, 12 sick days, 12 vacation days and 3 personal days. Transportation reimbursements, a meal where feasible, a free annual physical and a uniform are also provided. Foster Grandparents are covered by an accident and liability insurance policy at no cost to them.

Volunteers must be at least 55 years of age and meet the income guidelines. They must have the sincere desire to serve, and understand children with exceptional needs, be willing to accept direction and participate in In-Service Training.
