Friendly Visitors |
|
Tribury Friendly Visitors, serving Southbury, Middlebury & Woodbury, is a volunteer program administered by New Opportunities, Inc. It is designed for elders who are living alone, have relatively few contacts or are feeling lonely or isolated. Carefully screened volunteers are matched with elderly clients who benefit from and enjoy receiving regular visits and phone calls from a caring friend. Friendly Visitors offer companionship and help in re-establishing the give and take of normal life. They can:
read aloud |
play a game |
chat over tea |
write a letter |
go for a walk |
be a good listener |
Friendly Visitors are people who enjoy visiting with elderly people. They feel enriched by the wisdom and memories that these people have to share, they enjoy listening and have the time to make regular visits and phone calls. Friendly Visitors do not function as visiting nurses, housekeepers or health care workers. Tribury Friendly Visitors is funded by the Western CT Area Agency on Aging, Southbury Community Trust Fund and private donations.
Becoming a Friendly Visitor
To become a Friendly Visitor complete an application available from the Volunteer Coordinator. You will be required to have a background and police check. The Coordinator will interview you about your interests and hobbies in order to match you to a person with shared interests. You will then attend a training class with other Friendly Visitors.
Upon completion of training you will be matched with a client. The Volunteer Coordinator will introduce you to your new friend, come with you on the first visit and will continue to be available to discuss questions or concerns that may arise.
Requesting a Friendly Volunteer
When you request to be matched with a Friendly Visitor, the Volunteer Coordinator will call to discuss your interests and hobbies, the best time for someone to visit, and answer any questions. When a suitable match is found she will introduce you to the Friendly Visitor and will continue to be available to you by telephone.
If you feel that you would enjoy having someone visit and share stories and interests, contact the Volunteer Coordinator. If you are a family member, a friend, or a healthcare provider who would like to refer someone to the program, please call the Volunteer Coordinator for more information at (203) 262-0667.
