New Opportunities' mission is to improve the quality of life for economically disadvantaged individuals by providing the necessary resources to increase their standard of living, foster self-improvement and maximize self-empowerment.
New Opportunities, Inc. is the community action agency for Waterbury and the 27 surrounding communities. The agency's mission is to improve the quality of life for economically disadvantaged individuals by providing the necessary resources to increase their standard of living, foster self improvement, maximize self empowerment and increase economic self-sufficiency. The Agency incorporated as a private non-profit corporation in the State of Connecticut in 1964 and is a tax-exempt 501 (c) (3) organization. Presently with an annual budget in excess of $48 million dollars, New Opportunities, Inc. administers social service programs targeted to the low-income and elderly communities. The services and opportunities provided through our programs are designed to increase the participation in and quality of an individuals and/or families life.
Over 70 social service programs are administered by the Agency. New Opportunities, Inc. currently sponsors a variety of social programs in the general areas of: Energy Assistance/Weatherization, AIDS/HIV Prevention, Fatherhood Initiative, Education and Support Services, Child Welfare and Family Services, Early Childhood Education Programs, Elderly Services, Homeless Shelter/Housing and Ex-offender Programs/Re-Entry Services.
A Board of Directors comprised of 1/3 elected officials, 1/3 private sector representatives and 1/3 representatives of the low-income community governs New Opportunities, Inc. The Board provides direction to agency activities and approves program proposals. The Agency is classified as a minority CBO, with 79% of its Board Members composed of racial or ethnic minorities. The overall responsibility for the operation of the Agency lies with the President/CEO. He delegates the day-to-day operation of the Agency and Programs to an eleven member Management Team. All members of the Management Team report directly to the President/CEO.
