Chris Murphy stops by New Opportunities to inform about the Earned Income Tax Credit and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance servicesU.S. Rep. Chris Murphy, D-5th District, stopped in Meriden Thursday to encourage residents to take advantage of all the credits available to them when filing their 2010 tax returns.

At the New Opportunities offices on Cambridge Street, Murphy addressed local officials, IRS representatives and workers at the nonprofit organization to get the word out about the Earned Income Tax Credit as well as free tax preparation services available to lower-income tax payers.

"The federal government appreciates people sending in their taxes, but we don't want people to pay any more than they need to pay," he said. "There are far too many individuals eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit who don't take it."

The credit is available to low and moderate-income working individuals and families. The income level of those who qualify varies depending on the number of children in the household. Last year, more than 5,000 Meriden residents filed for the credit, which earned them $10.6 million in tax benefits, according to Murphy's office. That's an average of about $2,000 each.

Free tax-preparation services are also available across the state including New Opportunities, for those making about $50,000 or less. Appointments may be made with New Opportunities by calling (203) 235-0278.

Tax assistance is also available at the Meriden Public Library on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. For appointments, call (203) 630-6331.
