New Opportunities, Inc., will participate in the month-long, March for Meals Campaign, including Community Champions Week, a part of the Meals on Wheels Association of America’s national initiative to raise awareness for the Meals on Wheels initiative.

Local, state and federal elected officials, as well as local celebrities and businesses, have been invited to participate in events throughout March, particularly during the week of March 17 through March 21.

Events and community participation through the month will support the Meals on Wheels programs\, serving the greater Waterbury and Danbury areas homebound seniors.

The campaign week will include the annual Buy a Wheel Campaign, where local businesses offer their customers wheels for a $1 donation; a Spin-a-Thon scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, March 20, at Fitness at the Edge, 1625 Straits Turnpike in Middlebury; and the Community Champions Deliver Meals event, for the week of March 17 through 21, where elected officials and area celebrities are invited to deliver meals through their local communities.

“We are excited about having local elected officials, celebrities and businesses participate in our March for Meals Events and Community Champions week,” said Lisa LaBonte, Director of Senior Nutrition Services. “Having had a waiting list for home-delivered meal services from October 2013 through January 2014, it has been a difficult year for Meals on Wheels.

“And while the waiting period has been lifted, the program continues to serve more meals than budgeted, with hopes that the March events will raise program awareness and assist in filling the financial gap.”

Last year, New Opportunities, Inc. Meals on Wheels Program served over 500,000 meals to 1,700 homebound seniors in the Greater Waterbury and Danbury areas.

Each day the program delivers two meals to over 700 seniors.
