New Opportunities awarded over $50,000 in scholarships to forty-three local students at the organization’s 29th Annual Afro-Latin-Indian Scholarship Reception. An additional $17,500 was awarded to six children of New Opportunities employees who will attend college in the fall. Approximately 175 people attended the event, which was held on Thursday evening, July 17th at New Opportunities headquarters on North Elm Street in Waterbury.

Over 150 students entered the scholarship competition which solicits entries in art, poetry and essay categories, and is open to students in grades 6-11 who live in or attend school in Waterbury. The competition was judged by New Opportunities staff, as well as celebrity judges including Meghan Malcolm, Manager of Youth and Family Programs at Mattatuck Museum, and Cathy Conti, the Executive Director at the Timexpo Museum.

For the first time in the 29 year history of the competition, the first place winners in the art category will have their artwork displayed at the Mattatuck Museum. Meghan Malcolm stated: “as a Museum Educator and artist it is always a pleasure to work with other Waterbury organizations such as New Opportunities who promote and showcase artwork by talented and hardworking students.” Cathy Conti added, “I was in awe of the creativity and art ability displayed by the youth of Waterbury”.

Malcolm also said, “I also had the pleasure of participating in the judging of the art show and framing the first place winner’s artwork which will be on view in the museum galleries between Monday, July 21 through Friday, August 1. This will be a wonderful opportunity for friends and families of the student artists to come and celebrate their great achievements and explore the current special exhibitions on view at the museum.”

First place winners in the art category whose works will be on display include: Imani James from Kennedy High School, 11th grader Stuart Mena from Kennedy High School, 10th grader Xheklin Nano from Kennedy High School, 10th grader Gillian Greene from Waterbury Arts Magnet School, 8th grader Preston Senderoff from Wallace Middle School, 7th grader Journey Singleton from Chase Collegiate School, and 6th grader Jaslin Santos from West Side Middle School.
